Nowadays, it's probably much less interesting, as vastly superior programs to both RM95 and RM2K have been released since then. ***** I created this FAQ because I got bored of hearing ignorant people bashing others for still using RM95, while RM2K was there. It went up to the point some people would refuse playing a game because it was made with RM95, automatically deemed as "inferior". The quality of a game doesn't just depend on the program used to make it, but also on the creativity and skills of the creator(s). Also, note that many people started a game with RM95 before RM2K was out. While most of them jumped on the RM2K bandwagon, some others didn't feel like RM2K warranted restarting their game all over. ============================================================================ First of all... is RM2K really better than RM95? Well, of course it is. It has been released after, it's more recent, so it's normal that it surpasses its older brother. Overall, RM2K "owns" RM95... To make things short, RM2K has way more features, such a weather effects, more switches and of course variables, which lets the opportunity of creating great stuff like custom menu or battle systems... ... Don't already trash RM95 down the toilets though, it might still be of some use. Here's a list of the main advantages of RM95 over RM2K, or just simple differences: -No RTP file needed ------------------- The RTP file of RM2K is about 12 Mb... That's pretty big. Because of that, RM2K games take more place than RM95 games, in general... If you're using the RTP files for your RM2K game, it will be unplayable for other people unless they have the RTP on their hard drive. RM95 games don't require anything to be installed to be played. -More user-friendly ------------------- That's true. Mastering the basics of RM95 isn't hard if you're smart enough, and the menu and all its options are pretty clear. RM2K is sometimes confusing... For exemple, many newbies can't manage to make a "Starting Party Position" with it. -Higher screen resolution ------------------------- The resolution of RM95 is 640×480, as opposed to 320×240 for RM2K. That means RM2K games look twice more pixelated than RM95 games. -The whole party appears on the map ----------------------------------- On the one hand, in RM95, all the heroes are following the leader, it looks cool... On the other hand, in RM2K, you can only see the leader by default, all the other characters of the party don't appear. -All the tile sets can be used on any map ----------------------------------------- Unlike in RM2K, in RM95, you have 4 tile sets that you can use anywhere. You can have unlimited tile sets with RM2K, but only a weak number for each map. Depends what you prefer. -Introduction story easily done ------------------------------- With RM95, you can simply make the intro as you want it to be, there is an option just for that in the menu. In RM2K, if you want to make an intro story, you have to make it an event... which is a bit less convenient and natural for the creator, especially for beginners. -"2-Way Teleports" support -------------------------- To create a teleport event that leads you from a place to another, and from that other place to the original one, just use a 2-Way Teleport. RM2K is missing this feature, which means you have to create 2 teleport events manually. -Resources can be anywhere on your PC ------------------------------------- Under RM95, you can link the files you need for your game (BMP, MID, WAV) from wherever you want. No need to copy a file to a particular folder just to try something. With RM2K, all the files must be in the right directories of the game. On the other hand, that prevents the creator from being messy, so it's not that bad. -Characters up to level 100 --------------------------- In an RM95 game, you can boost your characters until they reach their 100th level. In RM2K, the max level is only 50. -No saved games limit --------------------- With RM95 you can just make as many saves as you want, as you just create or overwrite a file whenever you save. In RM2K you can "only" have up to 15 saves... although that's usually more than enough, and saving is a bit more convenient and natural. (you don't have to name a file everytime you save...) That's all! I hope some people learned one thing or two... Thanks to ASCII for having created RPG Maker, and thanks to Don Miguel for his Engrish translation of RPG Maker! ============================================================================ Send your insults, threats, etc. to: stifu@free.fr Visit my homepage: http://stifu.free.fr Created: 08/25/2002 Edited: 12/12/2004 (just reworded things and added the top note)
